International Students
International students are required to participate in the SHIP. Degree-seeking international students and all visiting students (regardless of immigration status) studying through one of the University's partnerships will be automatically enrolled in the plan. The cost of the SHIP will be billed by semester and added to your student account.
Exceptions
Degree-seeking students may request an exception to the mandatory insurance purchase if they are covered by a comparable U.S. based health insurance plan through one of the following ways:
- Employer sponsored family plan of a parent or spouse working in the U.S.
- U.S. based health insurance plan provided by a foreign government as a sponsored student
If you would like to request an exception, please contact the plan broker, Tim Cummons, at U.Richmond@rcmd.com or 1-800-346-4075, ext. 1452.
Studying Abroad?
Students studying abroad on a UR-sponsored semester or year program are not required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) while abroad since the SHIP is a U.S. based healthcare plan. All Richmond students participating in a UR program abroad are covered for unexpected injury or illness by UR Travel, Accident & Sickness Insurance.
Students who stop the SHIP while abroad but return to the United States before the SHIP begins for the next semester may experience a coverage gap.
Students are strongly advised to contact Tim Cummons at RCM&D (U.Richmond@rcmd.com or 1-800-346-4075) prior to leaving for their semester or year abroad to review the impact of cancelling their SHIP and discuss coverage options.
